Frequently asked questions
What is the rising sign?
It's the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why it needs an accurate time.
Why might my moon sign be uncertain?
The Moon changes signs every two to three days. If you were born on a change day and don't know your time, it could be in one of two signs: we show you both.
What if I don't know my birth time?
We can calculate your Sun and usually your Moon, but not your rising sign. An approximate time lets us estimate it and flag any doubt.
Your rising sign, Moon sign and Sun sign: the Big Three
Most people know their Sun sign because it only needs a birthday. Your rising sign and Moon sign need more: the time and place you were born. This rising sign calculator works out all three, your Sun, Moon and Ascendant, from the actual positions of the sky, and explains what each one describes. Astrologers often call them the Big Three because together they give a much more recognizable first sketch than the Sun sign on its own.
What each of the three describes
The Sun sign
The Sun is usually read as your core identity: what gives you energy and a sense of purpose, the qualities you're growing into. It's the sign horoscope columns use, and it's the one placement almost everyone born on the same day shares.
The Moon sign
The Moon describes emotional needs and instinctive reactions: what helps you feel safe, how you behave when you're tired or upset, the habits that comfort you. Many people find their Moon sign describes their private self better than their Sun sign does. Our guide to Moon sign meaning goes into this in more depth.
The rising sign (Ascendant)
The rising sign is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at your birth. In astrology it describes your approach to the world: first reactions, the way you start things, the impression people form before they know you well. It also sets the starting point of the houses and determines your chart ruler, the planet that rules your rising sign. More in what your rising sign means.
How the rising sign calculator works
The calculation has nothing to do with interpretation; it's the same astronomy any planetarium software uses.
- Your local time is converted to universal time using the IANA time zone database, which includes historical daylight saving rules. This step causes more wrong rising signs online than anything else: an hour's error in the offset can shift the Ascendant by a whole sign.
- The Sun and Moon positions come from NASA JPL's DE440 ephemeris through the Skyfield library, in the tropical zodiac.
- The Ascendant is calculated from the local sidereal time at your birthplace and the tilt of the Earth's axis. It's the point where the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path, crosses the eastern horizon.
We explain each step, and how we test it against Swiss Ephemeris, on our methodology page.
Why the rising sign changes so quickly
Because the Earth rotates once a day, the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon in roughly 24 hours. With twelve signs, the rising sign changes about every two hours on average. But the zodiac is tilted relative to the equator, so some signs rise steeply and quickly while others take much longer. At the latitude of New York or Madrid, signs like Pisces and Aries can rise in about an hour, while Virgo and Libra can take close to three. In the southern hemisphere the pattern is reversed.
The Moon is the other moving part. It travels about 13° a day and changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so twins born an hour apart share a Sun sign and almost always a Moon sign, but may have different rising signs.
When your birth time is approximate
If you only know your birth time to within an hour or so, pick the approximate option. We check the hour before and after your stated time and tell you if the rising sign could fall in a different sign within that window. When it's close, read both descriptions rather than forcing a choice.
How to read your Sun, Moon and rising together
The three placements aren't competing for the title of "real you". They describe different layers:
- The Sun answers what gives me purpose?
- The Moon answers what do I need?
- The rising sign answers how do I begin?
When all three share an element, for instance a fire Sun, Moon and rising, the person often comes across as consistent: what you see is what's there. When they contrast, say a Leo Sun with a Virgo rising and a Cancer Moon, there's more of a gap between first impression, inner need and core drive. That gap isn't a flaw. It's often where the most interesting part of a reading is. A useful habit is to describe each placement in a sentence and then ask where they agree and where they pull in different directions.
Element and modality help here. Fire and air tend to be outward and quick; earth and water tend to be steadier and more inward. Cardinal signs start things, fixed signs sustain them and mutable signs adapt. The zodiac signs section describes all twelve.
Beyond the Big Three
Three placements are a good starting point, but your chart has ten planets, twelve houses and the aspects between them. Your free birth chart shows all of it, with Mercury, Venus, Mars and the rest read by sign. For a complete written interpretation, including your chart ruler, Midheaven and planets by house, see the full birth chart report or browse all reports.
A note on what this is: the calculation tells you, precisely, where the Sun and Moon were and which sign was rising. What those placements mean is symbolic. Use them as prompts for reflection, not as a verdict on who you are or a prediction of what will happen.
Sun, Moon and rising sign: common questions
Is the rising sign more important than the Sun sign?
Neither is more important; they describe different things. The Sun is usually read as core identity and purpose, the rising sign as your approach to the world and the way you start things. Some astrologers give the Ascendant extra weight because it anchors the houses and the chart ruler, but a reading uses both.
Why did another site give me a different rising sign?
Almost always it's the time conversion: a missing or wrong daylight saving offset shifts the Ascendant by up to a sign. It can also be a typo in the birth time or a different birthplace. We show the UTC time and offset we used so you can compare.
Can two people born on the same day have different Big Threes?
Yes. They'll share a Sun sign and usually a Moon sign, but the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and the Moon changes sign every two to three days. Someone born the same day in another city may have a different Ascendant too.
What is a chart ruler?
It's the planet that rules your rising sign: Mars for Aries rising, Venus for Taurus or Libra rising, and so on. Its sign and house are read with special attention because it colors the whole chart. The full birth chart report has a section on it.
Does the rising sign describe what I look like?
Traditional astrology links the Ascendant with the body and outward presence, but we don't treat it as a physical description. It's more useful as a picture of style and first reactions than as a prediction of appearance.
