Zodiac compatibility: what sign pairings can and can't tell you

Zodiac compatibility compares two Sun signs and asks how their styles fit together: where they're naturally in sync, where they tend to rub, and what helps. Each of the 78 sign pairings on this page has its own write-up, from Aries and Aries to Pisces and Pisces. It's a good way into love compatibility, and a fun one, as long as you remember that two people are a great deal more than their Sun signs.

We don't give percentages or star ratings. A score like "Gemini and Capricorn: 42%" suggests a measurement, and there's nothing here being measured. What sign compatibility can offer is vocabulary: a way to talk about pace, temperament and priorities that both people can recognize.

How sign compatibility is worked out

Each pair page looks at the same handful of traditional factors, so you can compare pairs on equal terms.

Element

Every sign belongs to one of four elements. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is enthusiastic and direct. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is practical and steady. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is social and idea-driven. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is emotional and intuitive. Signs of the same element tend to understand each other quickly. Fire and air usually feed each other, as do earth and water. Combinations across those lines, such as fire with water or air with earth, often mean different speeds and different ways of showing care. That's friction, but it's also where each person learns something the other does naturally.

Modality

Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) like to start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) like to keep them going. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and change course. Two cardinal signs may compete over who leads; two fixed signs can dig in; two mutable signs may struggle to settle anything. Mixed modalities often divide the work more easily.

Distance around the zodiac

The angle between two signs mirrors the aspects astrologers use in charts. Signs four apart share an element (a trine). Signs two apart are complementary elements (a sextile). Signs three apart share a modality but not an element (a square), which tends to bring tension and momentum. Opposite signs, six apart, are a classic case of attraction between complementary styles.
