Zodiac Compatibility Explained: Beyond Sun Signs
How zodiac compatibility really works: elements, modalities, Moon, Venus, Mars and the rising sign, and why a percentage score can't sum up two people.

Zodiac compatibility is one of the most searched topics in astrology, and also one of the most oversimplified. Charts that rate Aries and Libra at 62% make for easy sharing, but they skip almost everything astrology actually uses to describe how two people relate.
This guide explains how compatibility works in astrological practice: what Sun signs can tell you, where they stop, and what a fuller comparison of two charts looks at instead.
What Does Sun-Sign Compatibility Actually Measure?
When people say "I'm a Taurus, he's a Scorpio", they're comparing Sun signs: the sign the Sun occupied on each person's birthday. Sun-sign compatibility compares two things:
- Element: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).
- Modality: cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).
Element describes temperament: fire is spontaneous and enthusiastic, earth practical and steady, air verbal and curious, water feeling-led and receptive. Modality describes rhythm: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs sustain them, mutable signs adapt.
That's genuinely useful as a starting vocabulary. Our zodiac compatibility tool covers all 78 sign pairings this way, looking at what draws each pair together and where friction tends to show up. But it's a sketch, not a portrait.
Why Do Some Signs Get Along "Better"?
Traditional compatibility rules aren't arbitrary. They come from the geometry of the zodiac: the distance between two signs corresponds to an aspect.
- Same element (four signs apart, a trine): Leo and Sagittarius, Virgo and Capricorn. Read as easy understanding and shared values.
- Compatible elements (two signs apart, a sextile): fire with air, earth with water, as in Aries and Gemini or Cancer and Virgo. Read as friendly stimulation.
- Same modality, different element (three signs apart, a square): Aries and Cancer, Taurus and Leo. Read as friction, competing priorities, and often a lot of energy.
- Opposite signs (six apart, an opposition): Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio. They share a modality and complementary elements, so they're often read as mutual fascination with a need for balance.
- Same sign (a conjunction): instant familiarity, sometimes with the same blind spots doubled.
- Adjacent signs, or signs five apart: no shared element or modality, traditionally seen as harder to "read" each other without effort.
Notice that none of these is labelled bad. Squares are the classic "difficult" pairing, and plenty of couples describe exactly that friction as what keeps the relationship alive. Easy aspects can drift into comfort that nobody works on. Our Aries and Leo compatibility page is a good example of how a same-element pair is described: lots of warmth, and a real question about who gets the spotlight.
Why Isn't Your Sun Sign Enough?
The Sun is one of ten planets in a chart, plus the Ascendant and the house cusps. Two people with "incompatible" Sun signs can have Moons in the same sign, Venus and Mars in close contact, and Ascendants that complement each other. The reverse is just as common.
In relationship astrology, these placements usually matter as much as the Sun, and often more:
The Moon: emotional needs
The Moon describes what makes someone feel safe and how they respond under stress. Moon contacts between two charts are traditionally read as the texture of everyday life together: whether comfort comes easily or needs translating. Our article on the Moon sign goes deeper.
Venus: affection and taste
Venus shows how someone gives and receives affection, what they find beautiful and what they value. Compare two Venus signs and you often learn more about romantic style than from two Suns.
Mars: desire and conflict
Mars describes drive, desire and how someone handles anger. Venus–Mars contacts between charts are the classic indicator of attraction; Mars–Mars squares can describe couples who argue easily, for better or worse.
The Ascendant: first impressions
The rising sign colors how someone comes across and how they approach new situations. It needs an accurate birth time, which is why our rising sign calculator asks for one. More in our guide to the rising sign.
Mercury and Saturn: talking and staying
Mercury contacts suggest how easily two people understand each other's way of thinking. Saturn contacts are traditionally linked with commitment, responsibility and the sense of "this is serious", sometimes reassuring, sometimes heavy.
What Is Synastry, and How Is It Different?
Synastry is the full comparison of two birth charts. Instead of matching two Sun signs, it measures the angle between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other, then looks at where each person's planets fall in the other's houses.
The result is a list of contacts, often dozens, each with an orb (how close it is to exact). A Venus–Moon trine within 2° says something more specific than "Taurus and Virgo are both earth signs". You can compare two charts for free with our synastry tool, and our guide on how to read a synastry chart explains how to make sense of the results.
Why Don't We Give a Compatibility Percentage?
Because the number would be invented. To produce a score you'd have to decide that a trine is worth +5 and a square −3, that Venus counts double, and so on. Every one of those weights is a choice, not a measurement, and the final figure hides those choices behind something that looks precise.
There's also a deeper problem: astrology doesn't predict whether a relationship will work. There's no scientific evidence that Sun-sign pairings predict whether a couple stays together, and careful astrologers don't claim otherwise. What a chart comparison can offer is language for dynamics: where two people are likely to feel in sync, where they may misread each other, and what each brings that the other lacks.
So on Elencya we describe affinities and frictions in words and leave the scorecard out.
How Should You Use Compatibility Readings?
A few practical suggestions:
- Treat Sun-sign pairings as conversation starters, not verdicts.
- Look at the Moon and Venus of both people before drawing conclusions.
- Read tensions as information: where do you need to explain yourself more?
- Never use a reading to justify staying in, or leaving, a relationship that isn't good for you. Real behavior matters more than any chart.
If you want the whole comparison organized by theme (attraction, emotional bond, communication, commitment), the love compatibility report interprets every relevant contact between two charts, with no score.
What Compatibility Astrology Can and Can't Do
At its best, comparing charts gives two people a shared, playful vocabulary for talking about differences that are otherwise hard to name. It can't tell you whether someone is right for you, predict how long a relationship will last, or outweigh what you see in how a person actually treats you. Use it to understand, not to decide.
